Church Our church, located in the historic area of Wilmington, North Carolina. The church began its spiritual
activity in the early 20th century and continues to support the individual and collective pursuit of spiritual healing and
worship through its two weekly services, outreach programs, literature, reading room and Sunday School. This church follows
both the teachings and practice of the Master, Christ Jesus, and the founder and discoverer of Christian
Science, Mary Baker Eddy. We conduct a Sunday service at 10 AM, and a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at 7:3 0 PM. We
welcome all children under the age of 20 to our Sunday School, which meets at the same time as the Sunday service. Child care
for very young children is provided at the Sunday service and the Wednesday evening meeting.
Sunday Service 10:00 - 11:00
Wednesday 7:30 - 8:30
Sunday School and Nursery provided at the sames time
as the services.
Services
We welcome everyone
to our services. The Sunday service culminates a week of study of the Christian Science Lesson‑Sermon, consisting of
topical readings from the King James version of the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by the
founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. At the Sunday service, two lay Readers conduct the service, reading aloud the
selections from the Lesson‑Sermon for that week. Three hymns are sung, and there is a solo sung by a trained musician.
A collection is taken at the end of the service. The order of service and the Lesson‑Sermon are provided in the Christian
Science Quarterly, a copy of which is provided to everyone attending the service.
The Wednesday evening meeting begins with topical readings from the Bible and Science and Health by the First
Reader. These are approximately 20‑30 minutes in length. This is followed by a period where anyone can give gratitude
for healings or inspiration they've experienced from their study of Christian Science. This healing service includes
the singing of 3 hymns.
Sunday School Sunday School is held at the same time as the Sunday service. In the Sunday
School, children are taught practical spirituality appropriate for their ages. Early lessons include the Ten Commandments,
the Beatitudes, the Sermon on the Mount, and other lessons appropriate for their age. Older children are taught healing concepts
and methods to help them deal with the daily issues they face. All of these lessons focus on a God who is all‑loving,
who helps us overcome all types of problems and does not punish us for things we cannot help. The Sunday School and the church
services help build our trust in a God who can help us deal successfully with any issue from disease to fear to relationship
problems or to sin of many kinds.
Reading Room Our church, like all local Christian Science churches, operates a Reading Room that is open to the public
Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 2 PM, Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:15 PM, and by appointment. The Reading Room is located
in the church building at 1620 Chestnut Street. Anyone can come in and read, study, or pray, or simply ask questions of the
attendant about spirituality and healing. They can also order Christian Science literature including the textbook, Science
and Health, which is a practical guide to spiritual living and, with the Bible, a "self‑improvement"
manual of the highest order.
Public Service Activities
Radio Programs
In our community we also sponsor
weekly broadcasts of one of the Christian Science periodicals, the Christian Science Sentinel. These broadcasts are
on WAAV‑980 radio at 10 AM every Sunday. The print version of this periodical, along with other periodicals, including
the Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Quarterly, are available in the Reading Room. The
Christian Science Journal also contains contact information for Christian Science practitioners in many communities
throughout the world, including Wilmington. These individuals devote their full time to responding to requests for prayer
for healing.
